|Chapter 5||Education: Education is a key component to achieving the Bike 2015 Plan's goals to increase the number of trips by bicycle and improve the safety of the bicycling environment. Many people think that bicycling in Chicago is dangerous. This concern keeps people from bicycling more, or at all. A key way to address this concern is through education, particularly through the six objectives identified in this chapter.|
|Objective 2||Deliver bicycle education programs and campaigns to target audiences.|
Expand the Safe Routes to School program so that elementary school students in Chicago have the skills to bicycle safely to school.
Bicycling to school is an excellent way to build regular physical activity into children's lives, especially important given the epidemic level of childhood obesity. In 2004, the Safe Routes to School program educated children at 20 Chicago Public Schools.
|Peformance Measure||Train students at 150 elementary schools per year by 2009, increasing to 500 elementary schools by 2015.|
