Construct grade-separated connections at appropriate locations to connect trails and provide safe crossings of busy roadways.

Strategy 1.2.1 Details

Chapter 1Bikeway Network: "Bikeways" are streets and trails specifically designed for bicycle travel. Bikeways help bicyclists feel comfortable riding, whether on streets with heavy motor-vehicle traffic or on off-street trails. Surveys consistently indicate that providing bikeways is the most effective way to encourage bicycling.
Objective 2Establish new trails, improve existing trails, and improve access to trails.

Strategy 1

Construct grade-separated connections at appropriate locations to connect trails and provide safe crossings of busy roadways.

Maintain safe trail access to the roadway.

Peformance MeasureIdentify the priority 3-5 locations to establish grade-separated connections in 2006. Construct them by 2015.
Tracker NotesOnly 1 location has been identified (Navy Pier Flyover). It's not clear if this will be completed by 2015. Several bridges on South Lake Shore Drive were identified to be replaced (35th, 39th) but no progress has been made since selecting a design in 2004. The 47th Street walk/bike bridge was replaced, but I don't know if it was part of this identification process.
